Explore this PousadaGuide to the collection
Portugal's Pousadas are distinctive hotels set in places with a strong sense of history, architecture or landscape. Across the collection you will find properties associated with former convents and monasteries, castles, palaces and other heritage buildings, as well as hotels whose setting connects them closely to a city, countryside region or island. For travelers building a Portugal itinerary, a Pousada can be both accommodation and part of the cultural character of the journey.
The directory above lets you search the published Pousada collection by name, region and property type. If you are still deciding where to travel, start with our regional guide to Spain and Portugal. The Portugal section organizes the current Pousadas into Porto and the North, Central Portugal, the Lisbon Region, Alentejo, the Algarve and the Azores, making it easier to see which properties fit a particular route.
That destination-first approach is useful whether you are planning a short Lisbon extension, a longer drive from the North through Central Portugal, a relaxed Alentejo itinerary or an island stay in the Azores.
Pousadas are not all the same kind of hotel. A former religious building may offer a very different atmosphere from a palace, castle or property chosen primarily for its location. The architecture matters, but so does the surrounding destination: historic centers, wine country, rural landscapes, Atlantic islands and southern Portugal can each shape the experience in a different way.
Individual Pousada pages are where we go deeper, bringing together images, location details, historical background, nearby places and practical information. The archive is intended to help you compare the collection before moving into those property-level guides.
For travelers who think visually, the interactive map of Paradores and Pousadas shows the individual published properties across the Iberian Peninsula and islands. Use it when exact location matters; use the region pages when you want broader destination context and nearby properties grouped together.
Iberian Luxury Inns also covers the Paradores of Spain. The two collections have their own histories and identities, so they remain separate in the main hotel directories. For a cross-border journey, however, the regional and map tools make it possible to compare locations and build a route that includes both Portuguese Pousadas and Spanish Paradores without losing the character of either collection.
